We often hear about the importance of calcium intake, and it's for good reason.
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, it's responsible for many different functions that are essential to maintaining optimal health. When you don't maintain a regular intake of calcium, your body draws on existing calcium stored in your bones for use in other areas of your body, this can lead to serious health issues.
So what exactly does calcium do?
Aids smooth muscle contraction
The benefits of calcium intake are numerous, but which type of calcium is best?
Calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium phosphate, calcium lactate... Confused yet? We know the feeling.
So why coral calcium?
To understand the hype behind coral calcium, we first need to look at the role other minerals play in your bodies use of calcium.
Calcium isn't a standalone mineral, as with all minerals it works better with assistance and a lot of that assistance comes in the form of trace minerals. Unlike the inorganic calcium examples named above which are sourced from rock, coral calcium is formed by living organisms.
The organic nature of coral calcium means that not only does it provide calcium, but it also provides a plethora of over 70 trace minerals. These trace minerals alone are enough to bring you health benefits, some of which you can read about here, but they also assist in the transportation and uptake of calcium meaning better bioavailability.
Multiple studies have shown how potent coral calcium can be when taken correctly. From increased bone density to reduced blood pressure, the results are amazing. See here.
Why we only source from Australian waters
If you're making the switch to coral calcium, the first thing you need to check is where it's sourced from. Coral grows in shallow, coastal waters, which can sometimes leave it exposed to harsh pollutants.
Our coral calcium is sourced from one place and one place only: Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The Australian government has been wise in ensuring that the water quality surrounding the reef stays as clean as possible. Hundreds of millions have been spent on eliminating water pollution through government programs and strict water quality guidelines are enforced. It's safe to say you probably won't find a better source of coral calcium anywhere else.
For those concerned about harvesting practices, rest assured knowing that living coral is never touched, every bit of our coral is sustainably sourced.
A word of advice
We aren't in the business of badmouthing other companies, but if you do decide to buy coral calcium elsewhere, just be sure that you're buying from a reputable company that sources from clean coastlines.
Many companies are currently selling coral calcium sourced from Okinawa, Japan, but with damage caused by the 2011 earthquake to a nuclear power plant, we strongly advise against buying those products. Radioactive waste has been polluting coastal waters there ever since and Japan has announced plans to dump over 1 million tons of nuclear waste water into the surrounding ocean. This is a recipe for disaster and one we can only hope has minimal impacts on the surrounding environment.
Never compromise on quality, your health depends on it.
